What to look for When Hiring a Wedding Photographer
Hiring a wedding photographer can be a daunting task. Your dream wedding is about to happen & you want to make sure it’s documented in the best possible way. There are countless wedding photographers, so how do you pick just one? Here are my top 3 things to look for when hiring a wedding photographer.
This first step is crucial. You only have one chance to choose your wedding photographer, so it’s imperative that you so some research to figure out what style you & your fiance prefer. Do you find yourself drawn to light & airy or dark & moody photos? Do you like the look of natural light photography or do you prefer the use of artificial light? Do you prefer the look of film or digital? Or do you know the difference?
You may love a certain photographer, but if their style isn’t what you’re looking for, move on. Remember, when you’re hiring a photographer, you’re hiring an artist. You’re hiring them for their creative eye & for their ability to artistically tell your love story. To achieve those epic images you’ve seen all over Pinterest, it’s important for your photographer to be able to stay in that creative zone. When you sign that contract, in essence you’re saying “I trust you.” It’s not in your best interest to hire someone in one style & ask them to produce images in another style. We work hard to develop our look & aesthetic & have honed our skills to create images that are in alignment with our brand.
This one goes back to doing your research. As you start looking for wedding photographers within your desired style, spend time studying their website, blog & instagram. Look for consistency in the way they shoot, the way they pose their subjects & the way they edit. You should be able to scroll through their instagram & see a cohesive compilation of their work. Do they usually backlight their subjects? What about the coloring & the white balance? Do their images tend to be warmer or cooler? Look at the way they pose their subjects. Do the poses feel natural, realistic & interactive or do they feel stiff & forced? Their style should shine through. If it doesn’t, move on.
The relationship you have with your photographer is more important than you think. I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Everyone says they “love candid photos”. But if you don’t feel like you can be yourself around your photographer, those candid shots will be challenging to attain. What most clients don’t realize is that the person you’ll spend the most time with on your wedding day is actually your photographer. Finding someone who makes you feel natural, comfortable & confident will absolutely translate into your photos. And vice versa. When I meet with potential clients, I always tell them that while I hope they choose me, if they don’t feel like we’re a good fit or if they don’t feel like our personalities mesh well, then I’m not their person. If you think about it, you’re basically hiring your own personal paparazzi to stalk you for an entire day, so make sure you hire someone you actually want to spend time with.
Now start doing that research & let’s make sure you get the epic wedding photos you’ve been dreaming of!
